General & Mrs. Ulyses S. Grant (portrayed by Stan and Barbara Prater) will be the honored guests at a luncheon where they will talk about how General Grant commanded the Union Army during the Civil War and was elected 18th President of the United States and what those years in the White House were like.  He will also talk about how he spent some of his early years in St. Louis where he met and married his wife, Julia Dent.   Grant and Julia lived at White Haven, the home of Julia’s parents for a time, after her mother died.  The log cabin Grant built they named Hardscrabble (both homes are on the property of Grant’s Farm).  I’m sure that Julia will have a few stories to tell about living at White Haven and the White House as well as their courtship.

Mr. Prater has been dedicated to teaching and preserving Civil War history since 1987.  He is involved in re-enactment groups, including the Eight Missouri Volunteer Infantry.  The regiment was made up of Irish immigrants working on the docks in St. Louis.  There were 11 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients in this regiment and I’m sure Prater will share about that Infantry group and their part in the War.

Both Stan and Barbara will come in period dress and give their presentation in first person as if the Grants were enjoying the company of the group and talking about their lives as well as the important contributions they made to the Civil War and to American History.

This presentation is geared for all ages so children interested in history are more than welcome to attend.
